A term used to describe fibres composed of synthetic linear macromolecules having in the chain at least 85% (by mass) of an ester of a diol and benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (terephthalic acid).

Note 1: This term is more restrictive than the chemical definition of polyester

Note 2: In the U.S., the generic term is more broadly defined to encompass the use of aromatic dicarboxylic acids other than benzene- 1,4-dicarboxylic acid and also to include certain aromatic polyetherester fibres.
