A chemical capable of reacting with metallic ions so that they become part of a complex anion. The principle is used to extract calcium ions from hard water, iron II and copper ions from peroxide bleach liquors and various metallic ions from dyebaths, by forming a water-soluble complex in which the metal is held in a non-ionizable form
